History
Crime Stoppers began in Albuquerque, New Mexico September 1976 in an effort to solve the homicide of a young college student working as a gas station attendant. After exhausting what few leads they had, a detective got together with members of the community and the media. They put together the first Crime Stoppers program which received the needed information to arrest those responsible for the student’s death. Today there are more than 1,200 Crime Stoppers programs in over 20 countries around the world.
Crime Stoppers began its first school program in the Boulder Colorado High School, August of 1986. There are now more than 2000 high school and middle school programs in the United States.
The goal of these programs is to assist investigators with solving crimes including homicides, sexual assaults, drug trafficking operations and robberies. School shootings and terrorist acts have also been prevented by tips to Crime Stoppers programs. These programs have resulted in over 780,000 reported arrests to date.
Crime Stoppers of Wellington/Sumner County, Inc. began taking tips November of 2007, serving all of Sumner County Kansas.
